Currently, there are no dates set for the Radio 1 weekend in 2012. Anybody’s best guess would be the same weekend as this year which was the 5th and 6th August, though this will not be confirmed until much closer to next summer.

In 2011, radio 1 weekend was due to be broadcast live from a special night from space but a few weeks before the event, they switched this so the live radio shows for Annie Mac and Pete Tong were broadcast from Ushuaia Beach Hotel. They were joined by a large amount of guests, some of them passed of as surprise.

In 2012, its hard to predict what is going to happen, They could be at Ushuaia again, but if im being 100% honest, it didn’t sound very good listening on the radio. I don’t think they will go back to Ibiza Rocks again, as it’s a little to soon. They could host something in Gala Nights, where the Zoo Project have their parties, as they have done events there in the past.

Something i did pick up on though at the end of this season was an interview in a UK newspaper with Pete Tong, he was talking about organising Ibiza’s first ever festival. I think this narrows it down to two options for me. The first option, which i think is likely, would be to have it the weekend before space opens at the end of May and have it tie in with the Ibiza International Music Summit which is May 23rd – 26th, though the dates don’t work right. Or, they may have radio 1 involved and have it as part of the Radio 1 weekend. Over the last decade (and longer) Radio 1 have been and done everything in Ibiza, they have been in lots of different locations, and they have been in most of the clubs. For people who have been around for that long following it all, it’s getting very dull, every year is pretty much the same, however, if they were part of a music festival in Ibiza, then this would be a first for radio 1 and certainly mix it up a little.

MTV have tried this before but it didn’t go down well with the local councils as far as i am aware which is why it didn’t stick around.

Regardless of all this however, Radio 1 will be in Ibiza in 2012 and im sure it will be a roadblock as usual

Radio 1 weekend – 2012

If you’re not down their on Wednesday at the times stated, i will be very surprised if you get a ticket. If you land in Ibiza on Thursday or Friday, then again, i would be surprised if there were any tickets left. The demand to be at Radio 1 events is remarkable and every man and his dog will be trying to get tickets!

If you do get tickets then a free bus will be put on for you.

Radio 1 weekend Tickets

Radio 1 have released information about the upcoming weekend at the start of August. Originally it was planned to take place in Space but now the plans have all changed and Space will no longer be part of the Radio 1 weekend event.

Radio 1 will now be broadcasting live from Ushuaia in Playa Den Bossa followed by a 6 hour essential mix live from Come Together @ Space.

Annie Mac will kick of events at 7pm from Ushuaia followed by Pete Tong, the Ushuaia party will go on until midnight but from 11pm there will be an Essential mix broadcast from Space.

Radio 1 Weekend Update

Radio 1 weekend can generally be looked at as the busiest weekend of the year in Ibiza, mainly because it is the height of the season, but also because Radio 1 rolls onto the island.

Over the last few years i feel radio 1 have taken their foot of the gas a little when it comes to the live broadcasts from the island. In 2009 and 2010 the live show came on a Friday only with other shows pre recorded.  This is mainly down to the Radio 1 schedule having all their dance music in one big slot on a Friday, however id like to hear more live broadcasts this year like they used to when they broadcast live for over 30 hours over 3 days!!

In 2011 Radio 1 weekend has been confirmed for the weekend of Friday 5th August. This year Radio 1 will not be live from Ibiza Rocks hotel which personally is a good thing as it had a massive chance of being the same as the last two years.

The info has changed slightly since i last updated this post, now Radio 1 will be hosting a couple of Events In Ushuaia. Initially it was reported the party starting in Space at 7pm but this is no longer the case as Space is now not part of the Radio 1 party, though they will be broadcasting the Essential Mix from there. Unsurprisingly for people who have been following Ibiza this year, Ushuaia will be getting in on the Action. Using Ushuaia gives the weekend a different look, Its in Playa Den Bossa which will make a change and though the format may be similar to Ibiza Rocks hotel i think it will have a completely different and fresh feel to it.

Annie Mac will start the weekend form Ushuaia with her radio show followed by Pete Tong with his. Ushuaia has made a big splash this year and they are hosting a lot of good parties. They have had Usha play (love it or hate it) and word is they have another big surprise name later this year.

Radio 1 parties there will be really good, although I’ve not been in the hotel myself, i have been to Ushuaia parties and I’ve never been disappointed.  The only issue i can see with using Ushuaia is people having to choose! The Ushuaia party will be free but if you choose to go to Ushuaia, i would be surprised if you get into space after for the main event.

After Ushuaia a special 6 hour Essential mix will be broadcast from over the road in Space.

Ibiza Essential Mix – Re Run

This blog post however is my exception to the rule. I always look forward to Radio 1 weekend and listening to it, i think it can be rather commercial but its on the radio so it will always have that element, I listened to the two shows from Ibiza Rocks Hotel and the atmosphere sounded amazing, The short set the Swedish House Mafia played was immense.

I then started to listen to the show that was recorded live in Space on Thursday night for Come Together, It started off with Mark Ronson and Zane Lowe and its then i couldn’t believe what i was hearing, i listened to about an hour before i had to turn it of and cry myself to sleep.

The set being played was the type of set that was played in my student unions nightclub in the university i used to go ago, it was the type of music i have spent a long time trying to avoid having to listen to, it’s the type of set you would have heard in many clubs up and down the UK, most of them probably called, Liquid, Time or Envy.

Does the track ‘Fat Man Scoop – Put Your Hands Up’ really represent anything remotely Ibiza? Did the music being played represent Come Together in any way?  Did the music played represent Space in any way? No. So why was it made part of Radio 1 in Ibiza?

Radio 1 were way of the mark with this night and i say that because it was more like something i would expect Scott Mills to play gigging in student unions. I don’t feel the music being played in space represented Space, Come Together or Ibiza in any way whatsoever.

Amnesia is celebrating being open for 20 years with a big party tonight. In the main room will be Jeff Mills with the legendary Paul Oakenfold performing on the Terrace, Oakenfold has had his critiques over the last 5 / 6 years but he was a pioneer opf the ecene in the UK, it was Oakenfold that opened the Ibiza spirit to the people of the UK and for that reason, i would cross my fingers hope he plays really well and get myself to Amnesia.

The terrace is playing a bigger part every year in the setup of Amnesia and i think the chance to see someone like Oakenfold play on the Terrace of amnesia is an opportunity i wouldn’t want to miss.

If that’s not enough, then tomorrow (Saturday) you can get back on it with a Cream Special @ Privilege

Amnesia is 20 and Radio 1 are in Town

It finishes off with Pete Tong with a more recongisable dance lineup being really upfront, It wasn’t long since Aeroplane did the Essential Mix bu then announced ther split, it will be good to see if both of them will be playing.

All in all, a great lineup this year, i personally prefer the second half of the lineup, however if you are there then its going to be a great day with Swedish House Mafia being the cream on the cake.
