Sankeys Ibiza Opening 2013

Posted by Gary on Tuesday 30 April 2013

A name that is being spoken about more and more in and around Ibiza. In 2013 the owners expect big things, as i blogged about recently, they are closing the Manchester club this weekend to concentrate on Ibiza and making the Ibiza club as popular as the UK club.

Based in Playa Den Bossa, Sankeys is a smaller club compared to the ‘super clubs’ but from everything ive heard about it, it’s a great little club. 2012 had some massive nights. Solomun was a stand out night as mentioned by Macloon in his interview. In 2013 Steve Lawler will be returning for another massive residency.

Sankeys Ibiza will be opening in 2013 on Thursday May 23rd which is the end of the Music week and the same weekend as the Space & DC 10 openings.

The opening party however, is set over Thursday and Friday with a great range of Dj’s on offer. If you’re heading out there for the opening weekend or at any point this summer, then make sure you check out Sankeys.

Thursday Opening Party Lineup  23rd May:

Steve Lawler

Mosca
Darius Syrossian

Ibiza Blog Sessions – Macaloon – One Night In Bossa

Posted by Gary on Monday 15 April 2013

A lot has been said recently about Pacha and its moves away from pandering to the ‘Superstar Dj’ and i personally back them 100%. Today we continue to celebrate real music from Dj’s who don’t need 100K to open their laptop.

Today we speak to Andrew, i picked up on Andrews music through listening to a mix he posted on twitter and subsequently went through his mixcloud. Andrew has kindly done a mix for us and i managed to ask him a few questions.

Hi Andrew and thanks for taking the time to talk to me, and especially putting a mix together for the blog.

Firstly a bit about yourself, who are your musical inspirations when it comes to what you listen to? Is it a Dj, or maybe even a venue?

I’ve been into electronic music since around 97, from listening to the early Ministry of Sound ‘The Annual’ compilations and it all kind of went from there. I’m a big fan of DJs and live acts who have their own sound. Acts like Maya Jane Coles, Dubfire, Solomun and The Chemical Brothers. They are instantly recognisable when you hear a track or set from them. I also love DJ’s like Chris Liebing who really embrace technology to take their sets to the next level and blur the line between DJ and live act.

Sankeys Manchester Closes to Concentrate in Ibiza

Posted by Gary on Thursday 11 April 2013

Sankeys IBZ has had two great years on the island. It’s not been an instant explosion of success and constant gossip, but the best nights never are. They secured some big names in the last couple of years and ive not heard anybody say anything bad about their nights. I even heard a rumour of reasonable priced drinks!! :)

Today, a statement has gone out on their Facebook page that they will be closing the doors on Sankeys MCR (Manchester) on the 6th May with a 12 hour party.

The reason? To concentrate on Ibiza! They have said that to be as successful in Ibiza as they have been in Manchester, they need to move the Manchester team to Ibiza for the summer. I personally think there is a little more to it than that, but they have not ruled out the possibility of reopening in the future.

Sankeys MCR is one of the last great clubs to successfully open every week in the UK, most of the so-called ‘Super Clubs’ stopped doing weekly parties in the UK may years ago.

Ive not caught up with anything else Sankeys are doing this year in Ibiza but i they are shutting the doors on the UK club and the genuine reason is to make the Ibiza night better, then this should be a great season this season for Sankeys IBZ.

ENTER.LONDON

Enter was a massive success at Space this year, Richie Hawtin has a massive following as it is so a night like this is always going to be an amazing night.

The parties in Ibiza this year were always surrounded by something special, be it a pre pool party or an impromptu set in the sea at Las Salaines (yes in the sea https://plus.google.com/u/0/107556293284765676583/posts/TwDuGdEv1HZ)

I think this is a massively early announcement for a night thats so popular (it’s not like they need 6 months promotion), But they have announced a May bank holiday event at the Brixton Academy in London. I’ve been to Brixton Academy before and its a great venue, though the slight slope on the floor can feel a bit strange!

Tickets are on sale at an early bird price of £25.00 plus the dreaded booking fee.

The lineup is a wicked one:

Richie Hawtin
Maya Jane Coles
Magda
Heidi
Matador(live)

In the short time since i wrote this blog post, the early bird tickets have now sold out.

Space Brazil

Posted by Gary on Thursday 20 December 2012

On the 29th of December, Space Brazil will be opening its doors with Carl Cox and Josh Wink. Space Brazil isn’t part of a club tour, its actually going to be a Space nightclub.

If you read the spec of the club it sounds crazy and strange, the club will hold 4000 people which is similar to the Ibiza, the car park will hold 3000 cars, i presume lots of people drive to and from clubs in Brazil! Oh, and its got a hellipad, ideal for all the Dj’s to be flying in and out. The picture below makes the club look great, very Space esc, if it opens in only a couple of weeks, im not sure why they only have an artists impression of it. Maybe its not finished.

I’ve never been to Brazil, but this is a part of Brazil i would love to now visit. Space of course isnt the only Ibiza brand that has made the trip to this part of the world. If your ever in Camboriú visiting space, you will HAVE to take a 50 minute car journey and visit Dj Gee at Bora Bora Brazil. Now ill be very upset if i needed to explain who Dj Gee was, but basically, he started Bora Bora Ibiza, and turned it into a place of legend. The place has never been the same since he left 5 years ago.

Circo Loco NYD 2013

Posted by Gary on Wednesday 19 December 2012

One thing ive never done in Ibiza, which i would love to, would be to spend new year over there. Partly because its new year, but mostly because NYE is my birthday, and its something i have never done!

This year, Circo Loco will be hosting a party on new years day 2013 in the usual spot of DC10. They have done this for a few years now and the fact it keeps on happening shows the popularity of the event.

Ive never been to Ibiza out of season (apart from when i was about 14) but everything you read points to it being a great time of the year to experience the Island and the nights without mass tourism getting in the way.

It certainly on my list of things to do. Check out the video below, its from a few years ago, and it looks like it was filmed in the 80′s, its still a decent little video though of the DC10 terrace on NYD 2007.

Doors Open 4pm and the lineup is:

Dan Ghenacia
Matthias Tanzmann 16:00
Dyed Soundorom
The Martinez Brothers
D’Julz
Clockwork 22:00
Shonky
Boris Werner
Sossa
Tato
René
Negru
Garagem
Ivo Toscano

More Soundclouds Added

Posted by Gary on Monday 17 December 2012

If you haven’t seen it before, i have a Sound Cloud page which lists lots of artists pages. Some of the artists don’t really do anything with them, other artists are very active, there a great way to keep up to date with your favourites, ive tried to keep it relevant so all the link on the page are for people who have DJ’d in Ibiza.

I’m sure there are lots missing, if you think something should be on there, let me know.

A Mass Exodus From Pacha

Posted by Gary on Friday 14 December 2012

2013 seems set to be a very different year in Pacha. I have already blogged recently about Tiesto not holding a residency with Pacha in 2013 with Tiesto claiming its too much to do it every year.

Yesterday Defected announced that they to will be leaving Pacha to set up camp elsewhere. Simon Dunmore said the following

Ibiza’s clubbing landscape, however, is rapidly evolving and these are exciting times. Continuing a tried and trusted formula would have been the easiest option but next summer will be our tenth on the island and our achievements last summer give us a great platform to look at the new opportunities available to us. So, to conclude, we will not be at Pacha next summer and shall announce our plans for 2013 early in the New Year.

It sounds like they have some exciting plans, and the fact that they have announced they are not in Pacha signals to me that they plans are probably confirmed.

The above are stories straight from the horse’s mouth. However, when i was first reading about this on Mixmag, they threw the following in at the end

There are also rumours circulating that Cadenza and Pete Tong are very likely to be leaving, along with David Guetta, Tiesto and Eric Prydz weekly nights possibly relocating to an alternative club.

Now, i find it hard now days to remember who played in which clubs in which years, but im pretty sure Eric Prydz did have a night in Pacha last season.

Take from the above what you will, i personally think that if five out of the seven promoters from one club are upping sticks and leaving all at the same time, then there has got to be trouble from within.

I could see Cadenza on the terrace of Amnesia or in Space, i could See Pete Tong anywhere and everywhere! I wouldn’t be surprised to see a collaboration of nights filling Privilege.

Time will tell, but it gets the brain thinking on a cold Friday afternoon!

Example: W.A.R Resident 2013

Posted by Gary on Friday 14 December 2012

Example has been announced as a resident for 2013 on Fridays at the Ibiza Rocks hotel for their “We Are Rockstars” night.

Most of the reports don’t seem clear but this isn’t the same night most people would be thinking about if someone mentioned a night at Ibiza Rocks.

Example will be performing with DJ Wire on the following dates

June 5th
June 12th
June 19th
June 26th
August 23rd

There is a further Date that Example has been booked for in 2013 and this is for the Ibiza Rocks on a Wednesday when he will be doing a full festival performance. If you want to see example performing like he does at a festival, than  August 14th is the date you want to be booking your hotels and flights for.

Circo Loco @ Victoria Warehouse Manchester Jan 2013

Posted by Gary on Thursday 13 December 2012

Circo Loco have just been announced to play in the Victoria Warehouse in Manchester on Saturday 26th January.

Victoria Warehouse has been the venue in 2012 for the Warehouse Project. I’ve been in the venue and its got a real industrial feel, after all, it is actually a warehouse they’re using.

The lineup for the event is a good one:

Tania Vulcano
Mathias Tanzmann B2b
Davide Squillacce
Clive Henry
Ellesse
Pete Zorba
Max Chapman
Jamie Trench

Tickets are £18.50 plus booking fee, there are 1500 available and they will probably sell out in the next couple of days so you will need to be quick if you want to go.
